Why these chords you may ask? They are the foundation to most songs, with a few variations. You should also l right away and not just chords. However, the songs you want to play have been heard by you so many times before. You should be able to tell if your song sounds correct. Plus, when you begin to sing a song with the chords, the rhythm will come naturally. I'm not saying you're going to be an excellent guitar player right away. What I am telling you is that you can start playing your favorite songs right away. Just like the chords, you can find your favorite songs on the internet. Most of the songs will have the lyrics with the chords located right above the words. These are not just the chords to the songs. The chord name (ex. G) must be located above the exact word that the chord change is made. Once you learn the main chords you should easily be able to play other chords. Also, most songs have a minor chord in them somewhere. These will be easy to play after learning the basic major chords.

The Basic Chords

C, A, G, E & D. Also known as the CAGED method. This method is designed to get you to be able to change chords into the various different shapes quickly when practicing them in consecutive order. At first, it is not easy. However, there is a good reason for you to learn this chord progression. Practice with Dan until you've mastered these chords. Next, you can add Em and Am to the progression for variation and color.

Basic Rhythm

Basic guitar strumming consists of a series of down and up strokes. When you put these strokes in different orders or patterns, you give a song its own rhythm. Example: Strumming Down, Down, Up ... Up, Down Up. This chord progression makes up the background for many songs. Download the mp3 audio file using this pattern with chords G, Em, C, C in that order and then play along with the mp3 file until you can strum it confidently. After you've mastered that common chord progression, strum the 8 bar variation of that strum by downloading and listening to the mp3 audio file of that version and play along using chords G, G, Em, Em, G, D, G, G in that order and you have the basis for playing such songs as: Stand by Me, Stay, Every Day, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, Blue Moon, Dreams be Dreams, I Will Always Love You, The Kiss. You should practice these different patterns along with the CAGED method and you're on your way to playing the guitar. See, it's not so difficult.
